At a glance
Muddy Matches and Horsey Lover UK both serve people whose lives are rooted outside the city, and both welcome riders. The difference lies in focus. Muddy Matches casts a wide net over country life as a whole: farmers, dog walkers, gardeners, walkers, country sports enthusiasts and equestrians all have a place. Horsey Lover UK puts horses at the centre, building profiles, guides and county pages around riding, racing and yard life.

Horse-first versus all of country life
Muddy Matches describes itself as a countryside dating service for the UK and Ireland, and it has a dedicated equestrian page inviting horse lovers to sign up. On its main pages, horses sit alongside farming, dogs, diggers and the general business of living rurally. Its tone is warm and humorous, with a strong sense of muddy boots and wet dogs.
That breadth is a genuine strength for some people. If you think of yourself as a country person first and a rider second, or you would be equally happy with a partner who farms, shoots, walks or simply loves the outdoors, a broad countryside service gives you a wide pool of people who share your general outlook.
Horsey Lover UK takes a narrower view on purpose. We assume horses matter a great deal to you, or that you want a partner for whom they do. Our guides cover dating an equestrian, introducing a non-riding partner to the yard, horse riding date ideas and the realities of livery. Our county pages focus on racing towns, showgrounds and hacking country. Everything is designed for people whose week revolves around a horse.
Neither approach is better in the abstract. The question is which describes you.
Interest tags versus horse details
Muddy Matches profiles draw on an extensive list of countryside interests. That is useful for signalling a broad lifestyle: you can show that you keep horses, own a spaniel, enjoy walking and like real ale, all at a glance. Tags make it easy to spot overlapping interests across a varied rural audience.
The limitation of any tag system is depth. A tag for horses tells a reader you like them; it does not tell them whether you event at intermediate level, hack a hairy cob round the lanes or spend your weekends at point-to-points. For many riders those differences matter. A dressage enthusiast and a hunting enthusiast may both tick the horse box and still have little in common.
On Horsey Lover UK, the profile is closer to a letter than a checklist. You might explain that your mare is a saint on the lanes but a dragon at the farrier's, that you are on part livery near Melton and that you are aiming for your first hunter trial. That gives other riders something specific to respond to and helps non-riders understand what they are getting into.
Prices: ours in full, theirs on their site
Our pricing page lays out every plan in sterling. VIP begins at £14.99 for a week and reaches £119.88 for a year, while VIP Plus spans £15.99 to £208.05 across the same range. The two annual plans close themselves at the end; the others keep renewing until you call a halt.
Muddy Matches shows its pricing on its own site. Because we could not view its price list without signing in on the day we checked, we do not quote any figures here. If cost is a deciding factor, compare the two directly before you commit, paying attention to plan lengths and renewal terms on each.
What Muddy Matches does well
It would be unfair to compare without acknowledging what Muddy Matches gets right.
A clear rural identity. Its branding, language and imagery are unmistakably countryside, and it has a distinctive sense of humour that many rural people warm to.
Breadth of interests. The wide range of countryside interests makes it easy to describe a varied rural life and to spot people with overlapping hobbies.
UK and Ireland coverage. It serves both countries, which may suit people near the border or with links across the Irish Sea.
Industry membership. Its pages carry the logo of the Online Dating and Discovery Association, the industry's trade body.
Equestrian welcome. Its dedicated equestrian page shows that riders are a recognised part of its audience.
When horses-first is the better match
Consider us first when:
- horses are the defining feature of your life, not one interest among several;
- you want to describe your horse, discipline and routine in detail rather than through tags;
- you would particularly like to meet fellow riders or racing people;
- you value reading material written for horse people, such as guides to dating an equestrian or racing-town county pages;
- you want to see every price before you sign up.
Who each suits
Muddy Matches might be your pick if you are a rural person with a broad mix of countryside interests, you would happily date a farmer, gamekeeper or walker who does not ride, and you like a lively, humorous countryside brand. It is also worth considering if you live in Ireland.
Horsey Lover UK might be your pick if you ride, own, share or work with horses in the UK, you want a partner who understands yard life without a lengthy explanation, and you prefer a site where horses are the starting point for every conversation.
Using both could work if you are a rider with strong country roots. Some people keep profiles on both, which is perfectly reasonable.
Practical tips if you try both
Should you run profiles on both, make sure they tell the same story so nobody feels misled. Leave your yard off each of them. If a match asks whether you are chatting to anyone else, answer truthfully. And compare the renewal terms carefully, so you are not paying for overlapping plans you no longer use.
Safety on any rural dating site
Rural dating brings particular safety considerations, wherever you meet. Pick a busy market town or a showground for a first meeting. Sort your own lift home, find out whether your phone will work there and make sure someone knows your plans. Be especially wary of anyone who asks for money, wants help buying a horse or claims to need a vet bill paid. Our safety guide covers these scams in more detail.
A sister site for wider country life
Those drawn to a wider rural approach might enjoy Country Dating UK, a sister site of ours for people who love the countryside in general.
The bottom line
Muddy Matches is a well-established countryside service with a broad rural audience and a clear personality. Horsey Lover UK is a horse-first site for people who want horses at the heart of their dating life. If you are country first, Muddy Matches may be the better fit. If you are horses first, we think you will feel at home with us.
